About Me

Daniel Owusu-Koranteng worked with the Maritime and Dockworkers’ Union ( MDU ) for thirteen years ( 1999 to 2012) as the Chief Administrative Officer of the Maritime and Dockworkers Union ( MDU) before being elected as the General Secretary of MDU from 2012 to 2020. He represented Organised Labour on the Board of Directors of Public Utilities Regulatory Commission ( PURC ) and served as a Commissioner of PURC from 2014 to 2021 . He worked hard as a trade unionist and led many struggles of the MDU to protect the rights of maritime employees in Ghana and was honoured with the Best Worker Award of the Trades Union Congress ( TUC ) Ghana in 2018. He has held many positions of trust at the level of International Transport Workers Federation( ITF). He represented Africa and the Arab World on the Steering Committee of the Dockers’ Section of ITF. He is a well-known Mining Activist who has gained local and international recognition in his fight against irresponsible mining and the protection of the rights of mining communities . He is the Executive Director of Wacam which is a Human Rights and Environmental mining advocacy NGO which he founded with his wife Hannah Owusu-Koranteng . He is an Agriculturist and holds a Certificate in General Agriculture from Kwadaso Agricultural College , Diploma in Farm Management and Agricultural Extension from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ( KNUST ) and Bsc Agriculture from KNUST . He has an M.A. in Human Resource Development from the University of Cape Coast and Executive Master in Alternative Dispute Resolution from the Institute of Paralegal Training and Leadership Studies ( IPLS ) . He is a Professional ADR Practitioner and undertakes Court-Connected Mediation . He possess Professional Executive Master in General Paralegal Training and Leadership Studies ( IPLS) . He has a Certificate in Adjudication for Administrative Agencies , Boards & Tribunals from Osgoode Hall School of York University, Toronto, Canada. He had training in ILO Maritime Convention in 2006 at the International Training Centre of ILO, Turin, Italy . He had a Certificate in Workers’ Education for Trade Unions from the International Institute for Solidarity and Development, Histadrut , Tel Aviv , Israel . He possess Certificate in Project Analysis from the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture in Cairo , Egypt. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Citizens Empowerment-Ghana He was a member of the Steering Group of the Fair Practices Committee ( FPC) of the International Transport Workers Federation ( ITF) for four years and a member of the Steering Committee of the Dockers Section representing Africa and the Arab World for six years . He was a Panel Member/Hearing Examiner that handled complaints forwarded to the Formal Hearing Secretariat of PURC and a Member of the Technical Committee of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission . He also served as the a member of the Legal, Complaints & Dispute Resolution Committee of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission from 2015 to 2020. He was a member of the Steering Committee that worked with Transaction Advisors to seek strategic investors for PSC Tema Shipyard from 2014 to 2015. He served as a Resource Person in the Workshop on “Extractive Industry , care for the environment and social Justice” organised by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in Windhoek, Namibia from 17th-21st December 2012 . He was an Examiner for the Ghana Institute of Surveyors (July 2012) He Participated in the discussion of BBC’s global coverage of the evacuation of the 33 miners from Chile who were trapped underground. He served as a member of the Environmental Committee of the UN Global Compact in Ghana from 2005-2007 and a member of the ECOWAS Committee of Experts that prepared the Draft ECOWAS Directive on the harmonisation of policies and guidelines in the mining sector for ECOWAS member states (30th September to 3rd October 2008) . He served as a. Member of the Board of Directors of Ghana Dock Labour Company( GDLC) for about ten (10) years and was part of the Global delegation to share experience on extractives with the government of Sao Tome and Principe in July 2003 when the Island found oil in commercial quantities. He was a Trainer of the GTZ-Sponsored Beekeeping Project that promoted Beekeeping in the then Wassa West District in the Western Region of Ghana. .He was an Examiner/ Team Leader of the West African Examination Council from 1993 to 1998. He is currently the President of the Ghana National Association of ADR Practitioners ( GNAAP) . He is a Writer and a Poet . His book “ Paying My Debt “ won the First Prize at the 5th Literary Awards of the Ghana Association of Writers ( GAW) . He has published an Anthology of twenty-five poems titled “ The Wanderer’s Poems”. CNN described him as a “ Man of many Missions” in a documentary of CNN on his life . His hobbies are Singing , Reading and Watching nature.
